The Duszatyńskie Lakes

– Distance from Maniów approx. 10 km

The Duszatyńskie Lakes are one of the biggest curiosities of the Bieszczady, and have given rise to many legends and stories. These are two landslide lakes located on the western slope of the Chryszczata Mountain, on the route of the red trail leading from Komańcza, to the Przełęcz Żebrak. The lakes formed in 1907, when the slope of Chryszczata slumped after a long rainfall to form three lakes. Only two of them remain to present day, the third overgrown with grass and algae. The lakes are a unique ecosystem with unique vegetation. Interestingly, the gases produced by rotting wood debris and vegetation in the depths of lakes cause explosions in the winter, which are seen as fountains of water where the ice sheet breaks.
